So This is the Dreaded Mirena Crash (and Burn)

IUD or intrauterine device

Experiencing and coping with the Mirena crash, following removal of the Mirena IUD. Symptoms, feelings, and helpful tips for getting through it.

The Mirena IUD… All I can say is never again. Ever.

I used Mirena for a very long time. And yes, I’m experiencing the Mirena crash at this very moment and have been for the last week and a half, though I really didn’t know exactly what I was experiencing until I started to do a little more research and reading.

I can say that I wish I’d researched the IUD more before deciding to go down that path. I wish I’d been more concerned about my health when I was younger, more concerned with living a more natural lifestyle.

Now that we do care more, we’re also getting a little older; I’m no spring chicken. And though my family may be shocked to read this (if they read this), we’re also planning to try for another baby (more on this in a near future post, I promise).

We weren’t going to tell anyone and just keep our secret all to ourselves, but Dan and I both decided maybe I should write about this and share my story.

Mirena removal side effects seem to be something that many women experience, but if they’re like me, they may not fully be prepared for them or even know they’re coming.

What Causes the Mirena Crash?

In short, the Mirena Crash is due to hormone imbalance following Mirena removal.

Now that I’m experiencing the crash, I’m seriously wondering if some of the problems I’ve experienced while having Mirena as a form of birth control have been due to that little foreign contraption hangin’ out in my uterus. So many things make a lot of sense when I think about it.

For the longest time, I’ve woke up with night sweats, had severe abdominal pain and issues with what I thought was my colon (nothing found on colonoscopy and other tests), mood swings, hair loss (you wouldn’t believe the amount of hair I’ve cleaned out of my brush time and again), weight gain that just seems stuck no matter how much exercise or eating right I do, etc., etc.

Mirena Crash Symptoms

Symptoms of Mirena crash can include the following:

  • Headaches
  • Fatigue
  • Mood swings
  • Anxiety
  • General malaise and feeling of just not feeling good

Since having the Mirena IUD removed about a week and a half ago, I’ve crashed (and sorta burned). Well, not literally, but I’ve honestly felt like it.

Headaches

Oh my word, the headaches. I can honestly say the only headache I’ve had that’s been worse than these headaches was due to altitude sickness because they’re killer.

No amount of ibuprofen or essential oils help. Nothing. It’s like I’ve gone cold turkey, and I just have to wait for the pain to subside, and it eventually does, but it can last all day.

The pain is all over my head, even in my neck. I’ve even had pain shoot up from my shoulder/neck area to my head. Awful.

Fatigue

I’m sooooo tired! I could sleep 12-14 hours straight.

Well, I can’t, but if I could… So tired.

Mood Swings

One minute I’m fine, the next I feel like I’m raging inside. Well, raging is what my boys call it when you get angry, so I’m going with that.

I’m irritable and grumpy.

Anxiety

I think this has been the worst of it all. I wake up at night, can’t go back to sleep, and feel this elephant of anxiety in my chest, mind, and spirit.

I can’t put my finger on exactly why I’m feeling that way. There’s no reason to feel anxious.

I mean, I have the normal deadlines for work, the normal family stuff going on, the normal chores and stuff that need done, but nothing out of the ordinary. I can’t put my finger on why I’m so pent up and worked up!

It’s like doom, gloom, and anxiety all rolled up into one tightly wound little package. It’s got me feeling like I’m going C-R-A-Z-Y!

And until I learned about the Mirena Crash, I thought I was going crazy.

General Malaise and Feeling of Just Not Feeling Good

I’ve almost felt like I’m coming down with something.

It’s just a general feeling of not feeling good. It’s yuck.

So, What Am I Doing about It? Mirena Crash Detox

(Disclaimer: If you’re experiencing Mirena crash symptoms, please do your own research, and talk to your health care provider. This is simply my own experience.)

Citrus fruits on a cutting board with a knife

Honestly, I’m just waiting it out and taking a few steps to help myself go through a bit of a Mirena detox.

  • I’m using my essential oils for emotional and general well-being, and I’m so glad I have them.
  • Drinking a lot of water. My water bottle helps me stay well hydrated.
  • Eating more citrus and berries and trying to eat things that will hopefully help me detox just a bit and get through this. My favorite blueberry spinach smoothie and tropical fruit smoothie are just what I’m craving.
  • I’m on a food-based prenatal vitamin.
  • Also, I’m exercising every day, sweating it out; and let me tell you, exercise does wonders for the emotions and for building up a feeling of strength.
  • I’m using my calming bedtime foot rub to both help with feeling anxious, and it helps my restless legs and arms.

From what I’ve read, I think my body is just freaking out a bit, trying to get back on track, and figure out what is going on and what it needs to do.

Hopefully, this won’t last much longer; most people say it lasts for a short period of time, about a week or two… A select few have gone longer or more long term.

I’ve also read that it gets better with menstruation. Can’t say I’ve ever looked forward to that ’til now. Oh but I do.

I honestly feel like I’m on the tail end of the crash. Yesterday was better, today is ok, tomorrow can only go up from here.

HI Mel. Thank you for writing your ordeal..it’s very similar to mine. I had the Mirena for 1.5 years. My doc convinced me it was the best bc. I have 4 kids and I wanted something I didn’t have to worry about..this was my first time with hormonal bc. I bled for 6 months after I got it in ..the docs kept saying it’s the body adjusting and stuff..so I went along being a mom! I fell off the stairs and I had the worst panic attack for something that wasn’t tha awful for i didnt hurt myself from falling. I had to call 911..vitals were fine so they left and then again heart racing chest flutters went to ER..everything came back negative got a dose of advan which calmed my nerves..I couldn’t believe what was happening to me for something so silly..I have been through so many other traumatic events and I never had any anxiety why now for a fall? I looked online and found so many people complaining of chest flutters, palpitations anxiety out of nowhere?! After researching I was convinced it was the Mirena. After another 3 months of debating what to do I decided to remove the Mirena on my own, I just slowly pulled it out on my first day of my period. I was expecting to bleed but I didn’t until after 2 days..I’m having heavy bleeding and yesterday I had another panic attack my heart racing 130 just sitting down doing nothing. .I was calm nothing stressful and just out of the blue palpitations and looked online again to find out about the Mirena crash also coming across ur site. I had no clue of a Mirena withdrawals. Im writing this on my 4 day post mirena.I’m having heavy bleeding ,heavy chest feeling and nausea ..I’m just drinking a lot of water .I’m having trouble sleeping and I was considering ordering some relaxing oils..asked my husband to pick up some vitamins,Gatorade ..hoping it will get better soon. I will update on how I feel next week. Thank you for your post!!

    1. Oh, Sid, I hope you are feeling better. I write this with concern… I encourage you to see a doctor right away. There could be more going on with what you’re experiencing. I’m so sorry you’re going through this, but it’s so much better to be safe than sorry. Keep us posted how you’re doing!

Thank you for posting this. It’s nice to know I’m not alone in this. I only had the Mirena just over a year. That was long enough! About 9 months into it, I started having brain fog, concentration and memory issues, then progressed into anxiety and depression. This got so out of hand that it caused me to take a 3 month medical leave of absence from work, see a Psychiatrist and Psychologist, get on antidepressants and Anti-anxiety meds. Not a fun ride at all! I lost my libido and had muscle aches and pains and headaches. I’m Mirena free for a month now and only still suffer from the muscle aches, pains, and headaches. The anxiety and depression have lessened most likely because I’m still on meds. This may be a good form of birth control for some women. Just not for me.

    1. Rachel, thank you for sharing your story and experience. I’m so sorry you’ve gone through all of this. I pray you’ll continue to find healing and feel better and better as the days go by.

Thanks..I appreciate that. I feel there needs to be more awareness about the synthetic hormones that Dr’s prescribe and recommend to us, like it’s candy or something. :-/

  3. Thank you for posting. I have had three of these horrible things and 12 years of strange symptoms that never made sense. Until now. My Mirena was removed three days ago. I have noticed that the crash is different for everyone and it scares me a little so I have decided to blog about my experience too. Partly to help others, as your blog helped me, but also to talk about it. Knowledge is power. You can find my blog here https://mirenanightmare.wordpress.com/ Once again, Thank you for sharing your story Mel.

    1. Megan, thank you! And thank you for sharing your story! I hope you’re doing well.

Hi, I had my coil removed 8 days ago after having 3 over 15 years. I felt great the first week then BOOM yesterday just out of nowhere got awful anxiety, palpations and suddenly feel manically depressed!! My children are 14 and 15 and I felt so anxious I’ve kept me son off school with me!! I gained weight and my hair thinned a lot with the coil! I’m hoping this crash is temporary and I soon feel normal again. The way my mind feels at mo I don’t even feel like I can concentrate and do my job properly!! :(

I want to thank Mel and everyone else who posted their experiences at having their Mirena removed. I’ve had it for almost two years. The most serious side effect I’ve experienced is weight gain. I’m now a size larger and my new clothes are already feeling tight. Despite the exercise and diet. After talking to my doctor about it, I decided to have it removed last December. But postponed it because of fear of the hormonal crash. I am afraid of dealing with the effects and my demanding professional life. I will have to keep gaining weight until summer when I’m off work.

    1. Veronica, be encouraged! Thank you for sharing your story.

      1. Candi

Hi Mel, I removed myou IUD about 4 months ago and I was going through the same symptoms as many of the readers on this page. However, I know that the sideadline effects can last a while but was breast pain one of your side effects? I am so terrified as it hurts so bad. I am in the middle of changing my PCP because my current one doesn’t do the right things. I am so scared of this and wish I never put it in. My husband praises me and wants to have intercourse all the time now as he stated when I had it in the smell that I got when my period was coming was so bad and he didn’t want to hurt my feelings. I had these headaches that were so bad I had to get IV at the ER and it still didn’t help. I even got and MRI done on my head and I have to get the results next week God willing. That’s how bad it gets. I never knew that the removal of this contraceptive had side effects, had I known, I would’ve never had one of served 6 years ago.

        1. Oh Candi, I’m so sorry for your experience. I would definitely talk to your doctor about the things you’re experiencing, the breast pain, the headaches, all of it. I hope and pray that you can figure out what is going on and feel better very soon.

Hi Mel. Thank you so much for your post. I had my Mirena out yesterday. It has almost been 5 years and we decided we want one more baby. I had actually tried to ask my OBGYN to take it out a couple years ago because of all the crazy symptoms that I believed it was causing such as numbness, tingling, ovarian cysts, cysts in my wrists, abdominal pain, etc. He looked at me like I was crazy. I have trigeminal neuralgia and peripheral neuropathy that started just a few months after the Mirena was inserted. My doctor have no idea where it came from because these are normally diseases that those at least 50 to 60 years old start to have. I’m excited that it was removed, but worried about the crash. This gives me hope to know that not only did it go away for you, but also that you’re expecting. Congrats!

    1. Lindsey, I’m so sorry you’ve had to go through all of this. I pray that you’ll begin to get some answers. Thank you for sharing your story.

    2. Allie

      Lindsey,

Have any of your neurological symptoms improved since removal? Have you tried any medication to help?

      Thanks,
      Allie

I can’t thank you enough for writing about your experience, and all of you who have subsiquently posted. I. Cried as I read, now as I write. I had my mirena removed on the 17th, after 3 1/2 years. It was so freeing to me, once that tiny little thing was out.
I wasn’t expecting was to come over the next few days, and still continues. Why doesn’t anyone tell you about these things. it’s obviously not all that uncommon. I literally feel like I’m losing my mind. I’m so emotional, Im either crying, or lashing out on someone in my family. It’s awful, but at least now I know there’s an end in sight. Thank you
    Kim

  8. Jennifer

THANK you for writing this. I had my Mirena taken out a month ago and I have been SO anxious. Anxious to the point that it’s making me ill. I was feeling so scared, thinking my mental health might be deteriorating or something. I just thought to Google “mirena removal emotions” and learned about the Mirena Crash, which I had never heard of.

I feel comforted knowing I’m not just losing my mind and appreciate you sharing your experience. Hopefully this ends soon.

    1. Jennifer, I hope you get to feeling better soon! I had never heard of it either, until I started Googling and a lot of what I read was exactly what I was experiencing. I hope this encourages you!

  9. Elizabeth Washington

Hi Mel, I Just had my Mirena removed on December 4th,2015. I feel happy about having that evil device out of me. The first time I had it, it wasn’t all bad except for my first Mirena crash as my daughter told me, I was a complete mess. Lost alot of blood and sleep didn’t exist at all. Now for the 2nd time of having Mirena, I noticed all of these horrible nasty side effects and thought HEAVENS TO PITTSBURG!! What is going on?? I did alot of research and thought to myself, this is amazing that alot of women have the same problems of me. What’s helpful is how we as women deal with it. So far being in the early stages of the mirena crash, I’m dealing with mild cramps, headaches every now and then, clotting and feeling malaise(I call it eh). I been eating greens and currently taking prenatal vitamins(I’m not trying to have a baby) and I feel good plus I know what to expect this time around. Will I get the Mirena again?? Never and since I have a big mouth hehe, I will tell all and any woman my story about Mirena. And I also got diverticulitis from the Mirena as well. I can say this, I’m glad I came across your website and speedy recovery to all.

    1. Elizabeth, wow, I didn’t realize it could cause diverticulitis. That’s awful! I’m so sorry you’re experiencing all of this. I’m so glad you shared, though. I hope that you are on your way to a very speedy recovery. The first couple of months were the worst for me, especially the first. Now I am expecting, so that’s a whole ‘nother ball game.:) It is nice to know that we are not alone, agreed! Praying you feel better soon!

      1. Elizabeth Washington

I was looking at a website that is linked to doctors that suggests that it can be linked to divertculitis. At least it says it’s highly suspected. And thank you plus Congrats!!! Best wishes and enjoy!! Keep us informed. :-)

        1. Thank you, Elizabeth! :)
