Perfectly Cooked Maple Brown Sugar Oatmeal

Simplify mornings with a quick and easy homemade maple brown sugar oatmeal. Dairy free Instant Pot oatmeal recipe using rolled oats and real maple syrup.

I remember as a kid when the boxes of instant oatmeal came out on store shelves. They were pretty much an instant hit with most every kid, especially with flavors like peaches and cream, strawberry and cream oatmeal and maple brown sugar oatmeal.

Both my mom and my grandma were HUGE fans of the maple and brown sugar oatmeal. We’d make it to go with our breakfast and even for the occasional snack.

Now with the help of my Instant Pot, I like to make it homemade, giving me the option to add less sugar and maybe make it a bit more healthy than those instant packs probably are. My family prefer steel cut or old fashioned oats, so I like to use old fashioned rolled oats.

If you’ve never made Instant Pot oatmeal, it’s really easy to make. And I’ve got a few tips for you below, especially to help prevent scorching and get that perfectly cooked texture to your oatmeal.

What Kind of Oats Should I Use for Instant Pot Oatmeal?

For maple oats, I prefer to use old fashioned rolled oats.

However, you can use steel cut oats. Just keep in mind, you may need to increase the cooking time by a minute or two, since steel cut oats can take longer to cook.

The nice thing is, with the pressure cooker, things tend to cook more quickly.

The Kitchn has a great article explaining the difference between steel-cut, rolled, and instant oats.

Tips for How to Make Maple and Brown Sugar Oatmeal

With this oatmeal recipe, you can literally throw all your ingredients into the Instant Pot, set it, and forget it. It’s so quick and easy, but here are a few tips that may help you along the way.

Tips for How to Keep Oatmeal from Scorching

While I have used milk in the past, and it does tend to leave a film or scorch (but never leaves a burnt flavor), I prefer to use water now.

With water, the oatmeal doesn’t scorch. In fact, it turns out perfectly cooked, and my family and I all think it tastes just as good or even better than oatmeal cooked with milk.

If you don’t want to use water, you may also be able to avoid scorching with the following methods:

  • Substitute another kind of dairy product (like almond milk).
  • If you find you just can’t make it without it scorching, reduce the cook time by a minute or two.
  • Throw everything in, adding the liquid last, and don’t stir. Just cook it.
  • Use the Instant Pot Porridge setting to cook oatmeal.

Flavor Tips for Oatmeal in the Instant Pot

How much brown sugar you should put in oatmeal depends on how sweet you want it. For this recipe, I use both maple syrup and brown sugar, so I only use 1/3 cup brown sugar.

I also like to add a little cinnamon because I love the combo of maple cinnamon oatmeal!

What to Put in Oatmeal

When the oatmeal is ready to serve, have the following ingredients handy:

  • Sugar or Brown Sugar
  • Cream or Milk
  • Pecans
  • Blueberries
  • Bananas
  • Other Fruits

I’ve always added cream or milk with a little sugar to my oatmeal after it’s cooked. Makes it oh so delicious!

Followed recipe exactly, burned the bottom, was overdone too sticky and I fed didn’t get 13 serves from this. I got 3 1/2 cups

    1. Kate, I’m sorry you had this experience. This has not been our experience with the recipe.

    2. Tiffany

I, too got the burn notice before the 6 min timer started, like a few people said. I opened and the consistency was good so I just left it as is. I used water and followed the recipe as you said. Not sure why it’s coming up burned on the bottom for us.

      1. That’s odd, Tiffany. We do not seem to have any trouble with scorching. You can try reducing the cooking time by a minute or two….You may also try greasing the bottom with a non-stick spray. Do ensure that your Instant Pot is on the Porridge setting.

  2. Laura

Have you tried doubling or tripling the recipe? Do you use the same ratios of oatmeal to water? (I have a 6 qt instant pot.)

    1. Laura, I haven’t tried doubling or tripling, but the ratios should remain the same.

  3. Kristy

How long would you increase time for a double batch?

    1. Kristy, probably none. It will just take it a bit longer to come up to pressure. Once it’s to pressure, it should still take the same time to cook.

  4. Amanda

Could this be added to the IP at night and set the timer, or would this mess with the texture?

    1. Amanda, we haven’t tried this, so I can’t really say for sure.

  5. Kim

I eat oatmeal everyday. I even order oatmeal in restaurants and thought this was the best ever. Loved it! I am curious as to what the serving size should be? You state 12 servings in your nutrition guide. I’m assuming about a half cup?

    1. Thank you so much, Kim! I would say probably around 1/2 to 1 cup of oatmeal.

  6. Vivian valentine

What setting do you use in a NINJI FOODI

    1. Vivian, I do not own a Foodi, so I am not sure.

  7. Julie Cooper

Sounds really goo t I used 12-grain cereal and the unsweetened almond milk and kept getting BURN” message. I ended up cooking it the old fashioned way…in a pot on my gas range.

    1. This is why I recommend using water because it will not scorch with water. The recipe calls for water.

      1. Josh

Lol. The sarcasm there. Mel, you are a miracle worker!

        1. Thank you, Josh! lol

      2. Sally

I got the burn notice using only water

        1. So sorry that happened, Sally.

          1. KG

I got burn signal too before the timer started. I just turned off, opened it up and stirred, and then put the lid back on for 5 min. It came out fine.

          2. Good to know. Thank you!

      3. Cassie

I made the recipe exactly how you created it…and also got the burn message. I’m wondering if I was supposed to leave the vent open instead of sealed? It tasted wonderful. I just lost part of it because it was stuck to the bottom of the pot :(

        1. Cassie, I’m sorry that happened. No, the vent should definitely be sealed.

    2. Jenny W

I find that i need to use a combination of water and milk to prevent the burn notice. I’ve seen similar recipes that call for double the liquid, so I would definitely add more liquid.

      1. Saphire Morris

My IP only has high and low pressure I’m thinking of trying it on low would you suggest leaving the time and everything the same?

        1. Hi Saphire, I’d likely keep the time and everything the same.

  8. Sandy

I made a half recipe of this in my 3quart instant pot. Best oatmeal ever! I believe the whole recipe could have been made.

    1. Thank you so much, Sandy! I’m so glad you enjoyed it.

  9. Sandy

Do you think this could be made in the 3 quart instant pot?

  10. Briana

Might be a silly question but can I make this the same way in a regular pot and just stir and keep an eye on it??

    1. Briana, I don’t see why not. You might not need to add quite so much water if you’re making it on the stove, though.

    2. Sandra

Love love love this recipe! It’s my go to for an amazing oatmeal breakfast now! Thank you.

      1. Thank you so much, Sandra! So glad you enjoy it.
